São Vicente ( Portuguese for Saint Vincent ) is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira. The county has 3136 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

Coat of arms

In gold a barefoot guardant saint with red-gold coat a palm frond over his right shoulder holding. About the shield a silver four-towered mural crown. In the white band at the sign foot the name in black letters on the São Vicente " VILA DE VICENTE S. ".

History

After the re- discovery of the island by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1419 began the initial colonization of the island of Madeira by the Portuguese. Middle of the 15th century, São Vicente was founded as an independent municipality. 1744 is the place to Vila was charged. The circle São Vicente learned in 1835 a reduction, in the course of the establishment of the new circles Santana and Porto Moniz. After transient reconstitution of the new districts in 1895 and the withdrawal of the field duties, the county boundaries were restored from 1835 in 1898, and have retained their validity today.

Culture and sights

Local attractions include the Grutas ( caves ), old lava tubes, which can be explored. In the associated visitor center of volcanism and the origin is explained in Madeira.

From the 18th century comes the baroque parish church Igreja de São Vicente. The small chapel Capelinha Calhau from 1692 is directed inland, built into an alcove in the middle of the estuary.

The Casa Museu Horácio Bento de Gouveia in the birthplace of the writer, poet and journalist Horácio Bento de Gouveia (1901-1983) dedicated to the life and work of the poet.

A variety Miradouros are set on the edge of walking tracks in a circle and offer sweeping views.

Traffic

From São Vicente leads with the R104 the only road across the island south of Ribeira Brava. The well-developed road R101 ( sections E1 and V E2 ) with many tunnels leads beside the old road from the 1950s to Porto Moniz in the West. To the east leads only (as of 2007 ) the old spectacular, sometimes one lane, road R101 after about Ponta Delgada and Boaventura Santana.

Bus routes Rodoeste public transport company make sure public transport in the county. The lines 6, 139 and 150 several times a day in the south ( Funchal), west (Porto Moniz or Santa ) and East ( Arco de São Jorge ), but in a short cycle (less than two hours ).
