Sári Barabás

Sári Barabas [ ʃa ː rɪ bɒrɒba ː ʃ ] ( born March 14, 1914 in Budapest, † April 16, 2012 in Grünwald near Munich) was a Hungarian- German opera and operetta singer (soprano ).

Life

Barabas began her career as a ballet dancer. Age of seven, she danced in the Budapest children's ballet. Twelve years later she was the prima ballerina of the local operetta house. A serious accident ended her dancing career. Sári Barabas then studied singing in her hometown. At the age of 25 she made ​​her debut in 1939 as Gilda in Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto at the National Opera Budapest.

After their escape from Hungary ( 1948) Barabas had first engagement at the Stadttheater Zurich ( 1948-1950 ) and at the Vienna Volksoper ( 1949-1950 ); they then settled in Munich. Here she first worked for the Bavarian Radio and sang at the Frankfurt Opera and the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. In 1952 she sang in the Prince Regent Theatre with great success, the Queen of the Night in the opera The Magic Flute.
