Sarkand

Sarqan ( Kazakh Сарқан; Russian Сарканд ( Sarkand ) ) is the capital of Sarqan region, Almaty region, Kazakhstan. The town has 14,265 inhabitants ( 2012).

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Djungarian Alatau, 135 km east of the station Mulaly ( Мулалы ), on the railway line between Semipalatinsk and Almaty. Sarqan is located 185 km north-east of Taldyqorghan on the remote road to Semey. The eponymous river Sarqan flows through the city.
