Sarkis Zabunyan

Sarkis Zabunyan ( born September 26, 1938 in Istanbul), known by his given name Sarkis, is a naturalized in France of Turkish artists and art teachers of Armenian descent. Sarkis is the concept and assign installation artists.

Life

Sarkis comes from a modest background. He was born the son of 1915 from Anatolia who fled to Constantinople Opel Fleischer Garabet Zabunyan and his wife Duru and described himself as a very anxious, deeply religious and embossed by the war child. Later he attended the French Lycée Français Saint Michel in the Pera district. In 1955, at the age of 17, he accidentally discovered in wrapping the goods in his father's business page of a newspaper with a picture of Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream", a dramatic experience that moved him to devote himself to art and his later life greatly influenced.

From 1957 to 1960 Sarkis occupied at the school of the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul the degree program for interior design. He married in 1960 the Turkish philosophy student Isil Akyuz. Together they emigrated to Paris in 1964.

He participated in the at that time as scandalous today as groundbreaking rated group show " When Attitudes Become Form: Works - Concepts - Processes - situations - information " to which the curator Harald Szeemann from March 22 to April 27, 1969 sixty-nine U.S. and European artists invited to the Kunsthalle Bern, many of whom presented their work for the first time in Europe. Sarkis was a participant in Documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 and at the Documenta 7 in 1982 as an artist.

In 1980, the appeal was followed at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. After exhibitions in France, Germany, Turkey, Armenia, and in the United States in 2007 he showed his works in Paris at the same time at the Musée du Louvre and the Musée Bourdelle.

He lives and works since 1964 in France, where he has his workshop set up in a former printing house in the Paris suburb of Villejuif (Val -de- Marne).

Work

Sarkis early work is to be settled in the early 1960s, where he first dealt with gouaches, collages and canvas painting. From 1968 to 1976 he created - after the meeting with Beuys and influenced by this - almost exclusively installations and Tonintegrationen and, among other sculptures from tapes.
