Satanoperca

Satanoperca ( Latin: " satan " = devil, " perca " = perch) is a genus of cichlid from the ostandinen, northern and central South America. It occurs in rivers of the Amazon basin, in the basin of the Orinoco as far as the Río Paraná / Paraguay River system before.

Features

The Satanoperca species are medium-sized cichlids and 14 up to 27 inches long. Your body is flattened laterally and high, the abdominal line is approximately straight. The eyes are set far back and high on the head. The muzzle is facing, the mouth is very slightly inferior. The dorsal fin has numerous spines. Your last fin rays, the pelvic fins and the anal fin are often pulled out long. The various Satanoperca species are mostly of beige or light gray color. Bands or dark spots on the sides are pronounced differently depending on the type.

Species

The Satanoperca species are divided into three distinctly different groups of species.

  • Satanoperca acuticeps Group Satanoperca acuticeps ( Heckel, 1840)
  • Satanoperca lilith ( Kullander & Ferreira, 1988)
  • Satanoperca jurupari, Earth Eater, ( Heckel, 1840)
  • Satanoperca leucosticta ( Müller & Troschel, 1848)
  • Satanoperca mapiritensis ( Fernández- Yépez, 1950)
  • Satanoperca pappa terra ( Heckel, 1840)

Reproduction

The different types of groups Satanoperca pursue different reproductive strategies. Satanoperca acuticeps and the two types of Satanoperca daemon- group are open breeders that lay their eggs in a pit dug into the ground water and cover it with sand, pebbles, empty snail shells and other materials. The types of Satanoperca jurupari group are mouth brooders. The occurring in Oriniko and Amazonian species ( S. jurupari, p mapiritensis, p pappa terra ) of the group take as ovophile ( "egg -loving " ) mouthbrooders the eggs immediately after spawning in the mouth, while domiciled in the Guiana Shield Satanoperca leucosticta as larvophiler mouthbrooders first open spawns on a substrate and absorbs the larvae into the mouth after hatching. In all cases, both parents participate in brood care (parent family) and take eggs or larvae into the mouth.
