Satcitananda

Sat-Chit - Ananda (Sanskrit, written together सच्चिदानन्द, Satchidananda or saccidānanda ) is the description of actually attributeless Brahman in Vedanta. Composed of:

  • Sat ( सत ) - state of being or existence itself, and truth
  • Chit ( चित ) - awareness, understanding, and knowledge. Will usually understood in terms of a pure impersonal consciousness.
  • Ananda ( आनन्द ) - joy, bliss. The pure joy of Brahman in the Upanishads is considered as the highest form of unconditional happiness.

Origin

Sat-Chit - Ananda is mentioned in many scriptures as a basic description of Brahman, but first appears in the Nrisimha - Uttara Tapaniya Upanishad and the Uttara - Rama Tapaniya Upanishad. Paul Deussen suspects a connection to Satyam Jnanam Anantam Brahman Taittiriya Upanishad the elderly:

  • Satya ( सत्य ) - truth, the actual non-empirical reality.
  • Jnana ( ज्ञान ) - knowledge, insight, beyond duality
  • Ananta ( अनन्त ) - Limitless, Infinite.

After Paul Deussen Anantam could also corrupt form of Anandam ( Bliss) be as in the Taittiriya Upanishad directly followed by the Anandavalli which describes Brahman as the highest form of Ananda.

Various interpretations

Some authors, such Ex. Aurobindo see in Sat -Chit - Ananda not only a description or various aspects of Brahman, but separate levels, with satellite the highest level and Ananda is the lower. These are referred to by him as higher triad, beyond which only the pure Spirit, Brahman is. Chit is referred to by him as a universal consciousness, which is to be found in a descending cascade of consciousness in creation. Also Yukteswar, Yogananda's teacher, in his book The Divine Science Sat ( pure being ) on Chit (consciousness) and Ananda ( bliss ). In Vaishnavism describes the Brahma - Samhita Krishna as Sat -Chit - Ananda - Vigraha, so the form ( Vigraha ), which has these properties.
