Male Satyrtragopan ( Tragopan satyra )

The Satyrtragopan ( Tragopan satyra ) is a species of bird in the pheasant family -like ( Phasianidae ).

Description

Males and females differ significantly in size and plumage coloration. The rooster is gorgeously colored and reaches a length of 67-72 cm. It has a black head and a blue Kehllatz. The bottom and the crop are red with small white spots. The brown-beige spotted female reaches a length of about 58 cm. The males weigh between 1.5 to 2 kg. The females between 1 to 1.5 kg.

Dissemination

The species occurs in the rainy forests at altitudes of 1800-3900 m in India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, southern China and Tibet before.

Way of life

The Satyrtragopan feeds mainly on vegetable matter. It eats grasses, leaves, berries and insects.

The breeding season is in May and June. The animals build their nests on the ground or on trees. The females lay 4-8 eggs. The duration of the incubation period is 28 days.

The Satyrtragopan is listed in the IUCN Red List ( IUCN classification NT).
