Sportscar World Championship

The team was founded in 1970 by Peter Sauber as PP Sauber AG to build sports cars. For the financial security of the company offered Sauber short time later to also service services for passenger cars. Starting in 1982, took part in the Sauber Group C of the World Sportscar Championship. The greatest success the team had in 1989 and 1990: With the Frenchman Jean- Louis Schlesser won it two years in both the Drivers 'and Constructors' World title. 1989 won Sauber C9 Mercedes with the engine at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Drivers were Stanley Dickens, Manuel Reuter and Jochen Mass. Legendary is also the junior school of the team from the years 1990 and 1991: Both the subsequent seven -time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher as well as the Grand Prix winner Heinz -Harald Frentzen and later the FIA GT World Champion Karl Wendlinger were at clean trained.

Sauber Formula 1

The Mercedes- era (1993 and 1994)

When the sports car racing series in late 1992 experienced its decline, Peter Sauber had already opted for an entry into Formula 1. The long-term engine partner Mercedes -Benz remained initially back, the team supported indirectly by a Cooperation Agreement with Ilmor in Brixworth.

1993

Sauber stepped to the Formula 1 season 1993 with a label " concept by Mercedes -Benz " and pledged Wendlinger and JJ Lehto. The Sauber C12, the debut car of the team, was a conventionally -designed racing cars, the Harvey Postlethwaite was designed in 1992 and Leo Ress developed in detail. The device built by Ilmor engines were designated Clean 2175th From the Italian Grand Prix, a B version was available which had a shorter stroke and slightly more power.

The debut in Kyalami, South Africa was a success: Lehto took 5th place and won two world championship points. The best results were two fourth places at Imola by Lehto and Karl Wendlinger in Monza. Low point of the debut season was the Monaco Grand Prix, in which both Sauber drivers collided with each other. Wendlinger fell out then, while Lehtos car had to be repaired in the pits for several minutes. At the end of the season Sauber finished with twelve points 7th in the constructors' championship.

1994

This success encouraged respect for Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug, officially to support the team as an engine supplier. JJ Lehto moved to Benetton - Ford and Mercedes- Youngster Heinz -Harald Frentzen joined the team. Karl Wendlinger kept his cockpit. When training for the Grand Prix of Monaco accident Wendlinger hard for a long time was in a coma and was replaced for the following race by Andrea de Cesaris. During the season, the sponsor broker got out, so the team was temporarily from insolvency. Only shortly before the French Grand Prix were with Swiss Timing and Sonax found two new donors. For the last two races at Suzuka and Adelaide JJ Lehto returned once more to clean. However, the season was as successful as the debut year: Sauber drivers won twelve world championship points (of which accounted for seven to Frentzen, four on Wendlinger and one on De Cesaris ), which meant the 8th place in the constructors' championship.

On 28 October 1994 McLaren and Mercedes -Benz announced their collaboration on the Formula 1 1995 season. The Stuttgart-based car manufacturer thus separated from long-time partner Sauber team, which had to look for the following season in the short term a new engine partner.

The Ford era ( 1995 and 1996)

Peter Sauber Ford won as a new engine partner and got the engines of to Renault exchanged, former Ford Partners Benetton, who had won the Zetec -R engine 1994 World Cup. Heinz -Harald Frentzen managed so 1995 in Monza the first podium of the teams in Formula 1, when he was third behind Johnny Herbert and Mika Häkkinen. With Ford Red Bull rose as a sponsor for Sauber and remained until 2000 the main sponsor of the team. With 18 points, the 1995 season was quite successful, with Frentzen scored 15 points and in the meantime for the team Wendlinger Come Jean -Christophe Boullion scored three more points.

However, this power could not be repeated in 1996. For defective prone and slow were the cars to the weak engines. Nevertheless, only the lack of patience Frentzen prevented the greatest success the team's history: the Grand Prix of Monaco fell in difficult weather conditions, many top riders from the German Sauber driver fought at half- time with Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine for the third position. After some long blockade by the Ulsterman the faster Frentzen ran out of patience and he slipped on the front wing from the rear of the Ferrari. Since the mishap happened at the end of the start -finish straight, he had a full round in a slower pace to cover the pits and lost a lot of time. The time of the accident before Frentzen positioned riders fell in the further course of the race of all, so Sauber team boss mourned the lost maiden victory after the race, and rightly so. Total reached Sauber this season only 11 points, one of which accounted for two fourth places and a sixth place on seven Frentzen. The remaining four points contributed Johnny Herbert, who was able to achieve in his only finish in the points in Monaco as a third party, the second podium finish for the team.

For 1997, Clean again lost its engine partner. Ford moved as work partners to the newly founded team of former world champion Jackie Stewart, who maintained good relations with the U.S. automotive group. Peter Sauber would indeed have to buy Ford engines, but would like Tyrrell just get last year's engines and therefore opted for a different path.

The Ferrari era (1997-2005)

Clean convinced his Malaysian sponsor Petronas, to take over the lease fee for Ferrari engines, which promised more competitive. Petronas agreed under the condition that the engines run under its own name - the Petronas 3.0 V10 was born. The partnership between Sauber under the Malaysian petrochemical company lasted until 2005, but brought little tangible successes with it. Four third-place finishes in nine years were the best results of the team. The close ties to Ferrari Sauber rather brought the reputation of the little sister team of the Italian tradition of a racing team that played the majority of the buyer in the case of difficult opinion finding processes among the teams.

After a respectable 1997 season, in which Johnny Herbert 15 of 18 points the team got and again came to Hungary in third place, the team fell for the biggest rule changes in recent years, the introduction of grooved tires as well as a reduction in the width of the vehicle, beginning 1998 into the rear midfield back. 1998, however, was able to join the team Come Jean Alesi nine points and reach a new third place in Belgium, Johnny Herbert disappointed in this season and gained only at the season opener in Melbourne a point. In 1999 and 2000, countable results were hardly recognized and the points yield was meager: In 1999, Alesi and Pedro Diniz together only five points, which fell all to sixth places. A year later, the team continued to stagnate; Diniz did not win a single point and only Mika Salo could bring in a total of six points.

Sponsor Red Bull slashed its commitment dramatically and switched to Arrows, because the funded by the Austrians pilot Enrique Bernoldi got no cockpit. Instead, put the unknown newcomer Peter Sauber Kimi Räikkönen in the car and witnessed 2001 the best year in team history. Along with Nick Heidfeld, who debuted yet no points in the previous year Prost, the Finn collected 21 championship points. This caused fourth place in the final classification of the designers. This level was not reached then again, even though the Clean Grand Prix winner Heinz -Harald Frentzen, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve committed. The driver of the team had to, in particular, with the drivers from the increasingly strong team BAR, Renault, Jaguar and Toyota measure that from 2002 achieved more consistent results and Sauber took the place behind the top teams in dispute. The last major success this time was Frentzen third place at the U.S. Grand Prix in 2003. Late 2004, the partnership with Red Bull finally ended, as the Austrians participate with its own team in the Formula 1 World Championship since the following season. In interviews Sauber had announced more often that he started a car factory as a shareholder of his team introduce to secure its long-term future.

BMW Sauber (2006-2009)

BMW took over on 1 January 2006, 80 percent of the shares, the majority of the racing team and thus founded the BMW Sauber F1 Team, under whose name the team from then on participated in the Formula 1 World Championship. Here, the Hinwil was maintained and taken over much of the Sauber workforce. Peter Sauber team retained the remaining shares and acted as a consultant during the four years of the BMW works team. The operative management has held BMW Motorsport Director Dr. Mario Theissen.

Return of Sauber ( since 2010)

On 29 July 2009, BMW announced the phasing out of Formula 1 at the end of the racing season 2009. After the failed attempt to sell the team to a supposedly based in Switzerland foundation called Qadbak Investments Ltd, BMW finally gave on 27 November 2009 that Peter Sauber bought the team - under the condition that the team's starting place in the formula gets 1 field, which had become vacant by the exit of the Toyota team.

On 3 December 2009 the Sauber team was officially the 13th on the grid for the Formula 1 2010 season, but was initially reported as BMW Sauber F1 Team. An official name change was requested in the course of the season. As a driver, Sauber undertook the previous Toyota replacement pilots Kamui Kobayashi and in Barcelona ( Spain), born Pedro de la Rosa, who had been previously employed in the year as a test and reserve driver at McLaren. In September 2010, de la Rosa, however, was replaced for the final five races by Nick Heidfeld.

2010

Sauber came into the 2010 season with the model C29. The vehicle had yet been developed to BMW - times under the direction of Willy Rampf. Engine and transmission, however, were - obtained from Ferrari - as in the years up to 2005. The vehicle was not without its problems in the first third of the season; especially the reliability of the technique was not secured. In the first six races of the year Kobayashi and de la Rosa came only once to the finish. The situation improved in April 2010, when James Key took over the technical run the team and the car has been revised. Since then, the Sauber came more or less regularly in the points. At the end of the season, the team placed with 44 points in eighth place in the constructors' standings. Of the 44 points Kobayashi 32, de la Rosa and Heidfeld took six points.

2011

For 2011, the team with Sergio Pérez committed a new driver, who brought some Mexican sponsors. The vehicle of the team was called the C30 and was developed by James Key. As the vehicle in the previous year, and the C30 was powered by a Ferrari engine.

At the season opener in Australia Pérez and Kobayashi came in seventh and eight to the finish. However, both were disqualified after the race, as their rear wing were unlawful constructed. In the following nine races to the Grand Prix of Germany, the Sauber drivers drove with one exception regularly in the points. A major reason for the success in the first half of the year was the low tire wear on the C30, which allowed the team a flexible tactics.

In qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, Pérez crashed heavily. At the exit of the tunnel, he lost control of his vehicle, turned and struck sideways into the boundary wall of the harbor chicane. The event commemorated the accident Karl Wendlinger, the accident at the same location in 1994 and was seriously injured. Pérez suffered a concussion and a compression of the thigh. The start in Monaco, he had to cancel. At the next Grand Prix in Canada Pérez took part in the first practice session. He then complained of nausea, however, and was replaced for the remainder of the race weekend by Pedro de la Rosa. From the next race in Valencia Pérez drove back regularly for Sauber.

From the middle of the season, the competitiveness of the Sauber C30 abated. Kobayashi criticized increasingly insufficient ground speed of the car. In the six world championship races from the Hungarian Grand Prix to race in Korea, the Clean reached only twice the points, scoring only five points. Sauber was then in October 2011 to seventh place in the Constructors ' Championship, the projection shrank to the Scuderia Toro Rosso three points.

2012

2012 was the team 's most successful season since the renewed takeover by Peter Sauber. Clean lay in the course of the season for a while in fifth in the constructors' standings and ended the year with 126 points from ultimately sixth.

The year brought some personnel and structural changes. In January 2012, leaving James Key, the designer of the new Sauber C31, the team. After his departure, took a team of employees who have been employed longer at Sauber this task. The responsibility for the design and development of cars shared since then Matt Morris ( chief designer ), Willem Toet (Head of Aerodynamics ), Pierre Guard (Group Manager for vehicle performance, vehicle dynamics and simulation) and Giampaolo Dall'Ara ( Chief Engineer at the race track ). Peter Sauber said the end of 2012, this structure has proven himself and his team will also work without a technical director in 2013. In the course of the year, Peter Sauber took a gradual withdrawal. In the spring he wore a third of the team shares Monisha Kaltenborn, who conducted the business of the Sauber Motorsport AG since 2010. In the fall of 2012 Kaltenborn took over the operations of the team management.

In terms of sport, Sauber retained last year's driver line-up for 2012. With the C31 Pérez took the second race of the season in Malaysia and in the 13th race of the season in Italy each second behind Fernando Alonso - the best ever achieved by Sauber Motorsport race result in Formula 1

2013

In the 2013 season with Sauber 's Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez at the start. Use the chassis is constructed under the direction of Matt Morris Sauber C32, which in turn is powered by a Ferrari engine. In the team management resulted from the departure of Pierre guard a change. His successor, Ben Waterhouse.

In the first half of the 2013 season, the team could not build on the successes of the previous year. Gutierrez came in the first nine races of the year each out of the points to the finish. Hulkenberg, who had qualified in the first race grid position 11, could not take part in the Grand Prix of Australia. Due to a technical problem with the fuel supply Sauber moved for safety reasons back his car before launch. Until the mid-season Hulkenberg reached thirteenth and eighth place. This Sauber after the Grand Prix of Germany in eighth place in the constructors' standings.

The second half of the season was much more successful for the team from Switzerland due to the new Pirelli tires. Clean strengthened from the Hungarian Grand Prix, his position in midfield and scored fourth place by Hulkenberg at the Grand Prix of Korea have previously best result of the season. The best team result reached Clean the Grand Prix of Japan, at the sixth and Gutiérrez Hulkenberg seventh.

During the 2013 season the team ran into financial difficulties. Peter Sauber confirmed in July that the team is no longer in a position for a few months to pay its suppliers; there existed outstanding in the amount of about one million euros, due to which there had been repeated to foreclosures. In July, the former chief designer Morris left the team. Shortly afterwards gave Sauber team boss Monisha Kaltenborn announce that with the Investment Corporation International Fund, the State Fund of Development of Nortwest Russian Federation and the International Institute of Aviation Technologies three new Russian sponsors will enter at Sauber.

2014

In the Formula 1 2014 season Sauber will go with Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez at the start.
