Sauwerd–Roodeschool railway

The railway Groningen Roodeschool, also called Hogelandspoor, was opened on 16 August 1893 as connection between Sauwerd and Roodeschool station, the northernmost station of the Netherlands. The railway line was built by the " Groninger Lokaalspoorwegmaatschappij " as a branch line of the railway between Groningen and Delfzijl -. On 3 May 1978, a extension to Eemshaven was put into operation for freight.

In the early morning of July 25, 1980 at Winsum a serious accident occurred. Here, 9 people were killed and injured 21 people. Two fully loaded trains clashed.

Traffic

Passenger services operated by Arriva and since 2007 sprint trains from Stadler Rail be used.

Expansion of passenger transport

Project management is an extension of the passenger traffic to the ferry port of Eemshaven. For the former freight line must be removed for transportation. In addition, 2.8 km new track to be built.
