Sauxillanges

Sauxillanges is a commune with 1179 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It belongs to the district Issoire and is capital of the canton Sauxillanges.

Location

Sauxillanges is located on the eastern slopes of the Limagne about 46 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand and more than 12 km ( driving distance ) east of Issoire. Usson, one of the most beautiful villages in France is only 5 kilometers away.

• The ruins of the Abbey of St- Pierre et St -Paul ( 12th century monument historique, private property). The abbey was founded in 927 by Acfred, Count of Auvergne; the necessary land was donated already I. by Duke William of Aquitaine († 918). In 1062 the monastery was on the rank of - downgraded Priory - dependent on Cluny. Pierre de Montboissier, the future Peter the Venerable occurred around the year 1110 at the age of 14 or 16 years in the monastery of Sauxillanges one.
• The chapel Notre -Dame- du- Bois ( 11th century monument historique, private property) was the former private chapel of the Priors. My late Gothic vault dates from the 15th century and has some remarkable keystones.
• The church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste ( 10th century monument historique ) was rebuilt in the 12th, 15th and 18th centuries. It is only preserved in parts.
• A house on the Place du Marchidial ( 16th century monument historique ) still has a late medieval spiral staircase.
• When building a house in the Rue de la Halle ( 15th century monument historique ) a fortified tower of the city wall was built.
• The Regional Nature Park Livradois -Forez is a few kilometers away.
