Saxby ( German Saksbi, estonia Swedish Saxbe ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Vormsi ( Vormsi vald ) in Lääne. The place is in the northwest of the fourth largest Estonian island of Vormsi ( German Worms, Swedish Ormsö ).

Inhabitants and History

Saxby has now only four inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). The village is just a few hundred meters away from the West Coast Vormsis.

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1540 under the name Saxby. In 1565 he is listed as Saxeby. Supposedly the village to have been founded by a German, hence the name "Saxon village." From 1588 to 1850 lived in Saxby only estonia Swedish population.

Lighthouse

Landmark of Saxby is the built in 1864 lighthouse, the oldest of the three lighthouses Vormis.
