Sayat Nova

Sayat Nova, Armenian Սայաթ - Նովա, " king of song"; native Arutin, Harutjun Արութին, Հարութիւն, ( born June 14, 1712 Tbilisi; † September 22, 1795 in Haghpat ) was an Armenian Ashyq ( singer, poet and composer ) and clergyman.

Life

Sayat Nova's mother came from Sanahin to the north of Armenia. He spent his childhood in a village near the Georgian capital Tbilisi. He was already in his early years a gifted writer of lyrical poems, singers and players on the Kamancheh. Later he performed his services in the court of King Heracle II of Georgia, where he worked as a diplomat among others. He lost his position when he fell in love with the daughter of the king. He then spent the rest of his life as a wandering minstrel. In 1795 he was killed by the soldiers of the Aga Muhammad Khan.

Work

Although he wrote a total of several thousand songs, are only 220 Sayat Nova are attributed, has been handed down. These songs have lost none of their popularity. From the traditional songs are 70 in Armenian, Azerbaijani and 128 in 30 in the Georgian language. Most of his songs are still present in Azerbaijani language. The Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian wrote an opera called " Sayat Nova " as a tribute to him. In 1968, under the direction of Sergei Parajanov a biopic entitled " Цвет граната " ( Zwet granata, German " The Color of Pomegranates" ) published.
