Säynätsalo

Säynätsalo [ sæy̯nætsɑlɔ ] is situated on the homonymous island in Päijänne district of the Finnish city of Jyväskylä. From 1924 to 1993 Säynätsalo formed its own community.

Säynätsalo comprises the islands Säynätsalo and Lehtisaari, a part of the island Muuratsalo and a strip of land on the mainland on the western shore of Lake Päijänne. The islands are separated only by narrow sounds from each other or from the mainland and are accessible by bridges. The distance to the city center of Jyväskylä is around 16 kilometers. The district Säynätsalo has 3,341 inhabitants (as of 2008).

By the end of the 19th century, the time corresponding to the municipality Korpilahti Säynätsalo island was uninhabited. It was not until 1897 a sawmill was founded, formed on the island a factory settlement. In 1914, industrialization of Säynätsalo continued with the establishment of a plywood factory. The plywood factory still exists today and is now owned by the UPM- Kymmene Group. 1921 sparked the community Muurame from Korpilahti. Initially Säynätsalo also belonged to Muurame, but in 1924 it became an independent parish. The community Säynätsalo initially covered only the island of the same name, in 1935 and again in the 1960s, the municipality enlarged but to areas of Muurame. 1993 Säynätsalo was incorporated into the City of Jyväskylä, although the two communities possessed at the time had no common border. Through the incorporation of Korpilahti and the rural community of Jyväskylä in 2009 Säynätsalo is now connected to the rest of the city of Jyväskylä, but only on the water; the land to Säynätsalo still leads over Muurame.

The most important building of the district is the town hall of Säynätsalo. This was completed in 1952 to designs by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The City Council of Säynätsalo is one of the most important buildings Aalto and ringing in his work the "Red Phase", used in the Aalto preferably red brick. The church was consecrated by Säynätsalo 1927.
