Scanlation

Under Scanlation ( contraction of the English words scan and translation ) refers to digital scans of published manga in Japan, which are translated by fans into another language, often English. This processing will be offered on the Internet for download.

Legal situation

Since scanlations represent unapproved changes of standing under copyright material, they are copyright violations and, together with its (also not approved ) distribution thus illegal.

The fan scene makes do with the " tacit agreement " that the proliferation of online translations should be stopped as soon as the manga to be licensed in ( mostly English ) western countries. ( A similar provision is found in the equally illegal torrents, subtitled by fans and distributed over the Internet Anime. )
