Scaphirhynchus is a purely North American genus of the blade sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchinae ).

Features

The Scaphirhynchus species have a fusiform body with a relatively broad front body having five rows of bony scales as with the other sturgeon species. The muzzle is broad and spatulate. Of the species of the genus Pseudoscaphirhynchus they differ in the four-lobed lower lip, which fringed barbels and elongated caudal peduncle, which is completely covered by bony plates.

System

The genus includes three species and is the sister taxon of the genus Pseudoscaphirhynchus with them together the subfamily of the blade sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchinae ) forms within the family of sturgeons ( Acipenseridae ).
