Geography

Course

The Schandtauber originates on the Hohenlohe plain, about a kilometer south of Blaufelden - Gammesfeld in a smaller, the alder forest upstream shreds. They first flows in an easterly direction. After about a kilometer, immediately after passing under the K 2513 from Hausen am Bach after Gammesfeld south of Rot am See - Hertershofen, the river changes its flow direction to the north. It flows east past Hertershofen and changes shortly after passing under the K 2677 on the edge of Gammesfelder shell being broken, the direction to the northwest. The river changes on this to the area of the district Blaufelden. It is passing the north-east of the village of Gammesfeld. Shortly thereafter, the Schandtauber from the left and runs south to the Heufelgraben, which she continues in a northerly direction. After about half a kilometer from its conclusion, again from the left, the long calyx ditch. The Schandtauber now turns its course to the northeast, and shortly thereafter, about half a kilometer south-east of Stan village, in a small arc to the east.

Now exceeds the limit of Baden- Württemberg to Bavaria and happens on the left side thereof a quarry, across her little slope here is now forested. To the north it passes through the parish of bed field of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, flows in the meantime pronounced valley over with Hangbewaldung at the upper mill and then changes to the Mittelmühle their direction to the northeast. Then it passes through the district Postal, which is above the upper left edge of the slope, further down the valley the Holler mill and hammer mill, both located on its left bank. Immediately afterwards they passed the Schandhof on a left, northwestern cut bank and then running northeast until the melting mill at Rothenburg, where they eventually, not half a kilometer south of the hospital bastion of the medieval city on the right Tauber slope, flows from the left in the Tauber.

Catchment area

The Schandtauber has a catchment area of 44.4 km ², which has approximately the shape of a north - south aligned ellipse between - in the north - the forest center of the large-scale high wood south of play stream and - in the south - the hamlet Hegenau of Rot am See. In the west its boundary between Speckheim and radio instead of running through it, in its center is Leuzendorf and at bed box, it extends on both sides of the lower reaches to a four kilometer long, but nowhere even a mile wide north-eastern hose to the mouth of.

In the southwest and west of the catchment area of Brettach borders that drains via the Jagst to the river Neckar, so here is a large watershed to. All other competitors dehydrate as the Schandtauber directly or indirectly to the Tauber. In the northwest there is the Reutalbach reaching across the ( Weikersheimer ) Vorbach this significant main inflow; in the north of Lord Bach, which she achieved in Creglingen, also quite far to the north; in the Northeast ( Rothenburg ) Vorbach and the even shorter flash stream. Continue clockwise finally close to the east side of the underflow of the hose Schandtauber the catchment areas of Wethbach and Lohrbach to, on the southeast and east of Rohrbach near Hausen am Bach.

Because the Schandtauber flows in a karst landscape, the underground drainage is very significant; it may therefore vary the effective catchment area boundary of the Talscheidelinien which can be seen in the landscape significantly. It is known for example, that the Brettach inflow Wiesbach loses the Schandtauber by seepage water.

Schandtauberhöhle

While up there the Schandtauber is above ground only a little water clot in a cave system occurs at bed box underground running water from a stronger karst spring to light. Some therefore see only here the origin of the Schandtauber. Before the water enters the light of day, it flows under the ground quite a few kilometers in cavities, the cross section reaches 3 m. They form the largest known limestone cave in southern Germany; it is since 1984 a nature reserve. The cave is reported by the Bavarian State Office for Environment as Geotop 571H001. See also the list of geological sites in the district of Ansbach.

Mills

From the steep slope of the Schandtauber seven mills were operating at the lower reaches, including the top and the food grinder, the Holler mill and the forge. The hammer mill was founded in the 17th century, here exaggerated three overshot water wheels 1825 three hammers on. Part of the water was diverted through a weir here to get the required drop height to drive the water wheels. Were produced there iron implements such as plows, scythes, shovels, axes, etc.

Biosphere

On the banks of the river preferred willows, alder and ash trees. The Schandtauber of clean water ( water quality class II) is quite a good habitat for fish and other aquatic species. So come against, inter alia, the brook trout, bullhead and the stone crayfish and the caddis fly larva in it. In the cave system in the Schandtauber live like cave dwellers cave snails and bats.
