Scharans

Scharans (Romansh Sharon ) is a municipality in the district Domleschg, District Hinterrhein the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Geography

Neighboring communities of Scharans are Sils im Domleschg, Fuerstenau, Almens and Vaz / Obervaz. In addition to the village itself to Scharans include fractions Parnegl (German Parnell ), Prin ( 836 m), Stufels and St. Agatha. Next, the Alp Danis belongs to the municipality. The most striking mountain in the municipality is the Piz Scalottas ( 2323 m ).

From 1618-1620 Jörg Jenatsch worked as Reformed pastor in Scharans.

The split of silver and black shield recalls Ulrich von Marmels and his work in Scharans while linden leaves for the huge linden tree standing next to the church.

Population

Languages

Originally the population Sutselvisch, a dialect of Romansh language. Already in the 19th century began a decline that language. Nevertheless, spoke in 1880 70% and 1910 59% of the population Romansh. In the interwar period, the language changes to German was. 1941 merely gave 30% Romansh as their language. Then there was a rapid decline of the Roman to 1970 (11% Romansh ). This could be slowed down for a decade. But since 1990, the commune is almost monolingual, as the following table shows:

German is now only bureaucratic language in Scharans. 5 % of the population understand Romansh.

Origin and nationality
