Schellas Hyndman

Schellas Hyndman (* 1951 in Macau) is a former American football player and current coach. Since 2008, he has the team of Major League Soccer franchises FC Dallas.

The midfielder played only a few years actively football. His most successful period he had as a college soccer coach at Southern Methodist University from 1984 to 2008 at this time., He placed the record of 466 wins out of a total of 637 games on. In 1981 he was appointed NSCAA Coach of the Year.

Playing career

Hyndmann originated in Macao. His mother had Russian and French ancestry and his father came from Portugal. After the Communists took over China, the power, the family fled in 1957 on a container ship in the United States. They settled there, first in Springfield, Ohio down before they moved to Vandalia, Ohio. There Hyndman attended Butler High School.

After high school he moved to the Eastern Illinois University, which he was able to finance due to a football scholarship. In his first year he won with the team the NAIA National Men 's Soccer Championship. In 1973 he left the Eastern Illinois with a bachelor's degree in sport.

In 1975, he played one season for the Cincinnati Comets in the American Soccer League.

Coaching career

After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, he went in the fall of 1973 to the Murray State University, where in 1975 he earned his master's degree. In addition to his studies, he coached the football team of the University. In 1976, he worked as a teacher at the Escola Graduada in São Paulo. He also worked at this time as a member of the coaching staff at FC São Paulo.

1977 Hyndman returned to the U.S. and took over the post of the football coach at Eastern Illinois University, whose football team played in Division II of the NCAA. Over the next seven years, his team scored 98 victories in 133 games. In 1981 he went with the team to the NCAA Division I and reached at the end of the season 3rd place by the performance, he was elected the same year coach of the year. 2001 Hyndman was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame Eastern Illinois.

In 1984 he took over as coach at Southern Methodist University. In over 20 years, he designed the very successful football with the Mustangs and has won several awards during that time.

On 16 July 2008 left the college soccer field and was coach of FC Dallas. With the MLS team he managed in the 2010 season until the final of the MLS Cup.

  • Hyndman in 2001 was a member of the NSCAA Executive Committee and took over in 2005 for a year the place of the President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
