The Schesaplana is with a height of 2965 m above sea level. A. (after Swiss measurement 2'964 m above sea level. M. ) the highest mountain in the Rätikon. About its peak the state border between the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, and the Swiss canton of Grisons runs. On the northern slope is the Brandner Gletscher, at the eastern foot is the Luenersee, with slightly more than one square kilometer, one of the largest mountain lakes in Vorarlberg.

Geology

The Schesaplana massif forms the westernmost foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps. Formative are thick layers of dolomitic plates and Massenkalken. In between there is the restless Raibl lineup with thin layers of va Gypsum, Tonmergeln and shales, which allows strongly stand against each other. In the summit area was finally finds the Kössener layers, again with dark marls, individual limestone beds and black to brownish shales, which are all easily and kleinstückig disintegrate.

Touristic development

The first documented ascent of the Schesaplana fully led the Prättigauer pastor Nicolin Sererhard with two companions in the 1730s. He described the ascent in detail in his geography work Einfalte Delineation of all municipalities common Dreyen frets 1742. The three then exceeded by Buchen after the fire Schesaplana. The rise resulted over the sheep and the hole Brandner glacier, the descent of the Totalp and Luenersee.

Some authors the first documented ascent of the Schesaplana is already dated to 1610. So reports such as the Alpine Club leader of an ascent on 24 August 1610. These to have occurred through the bailiwick manager David Pappus of Tratzberg with two leaders in the wake of Grenzbeschau the reigns Bludenz and Sonnenberg. From the historical and scientific point of view this is, however, untenable on the basis of contemporary records.

Increases

The summit of Schesaplana is multiple pages within walking distance and via the following two ways:

  • Of fire across Douglas am Lünersee and Totalphütte
  • By Mannheimer hut over the Brandner Gletscher
  • From Switzerland by the Schesaplanahütte from.

The increase over the bodies rising and Mannheimer Hütte is difficult and only recommended for experienced climbers. Also challenging, but less frequently committed, the rise on the western flank of the Schesaplanahütte is off. Significantly lighter the Südanstieg from Luenersee, but still requires good slip resistance.

On the south side of the Schesaplana Prättigauer trail runs.
