The Schierke railway station is operated by the Harz narrow gauge railways Brockenbahn in the district Schierke the town Wernigerode in the Harz in Saxony- Anhalt.

History

Situated at an altitude of 687 meters station was opened on 20 June 1898 and has since been employed as a railway station in use. With the completion of the line to the Brocken on 4 October in 1898 reversed the mainly used by tourists trains to the highest mountain in northern Germany. Since chunks was not served due to the snow in winter, the station, the trains always ended on 16 October to 29 April in Schierke. Only after the German winter sports championships in the spring of 1950 the Brocken was hit in the winter.

Due to the location of the lump on the border between East and West Germany, the Brocken Railway between chunks Schierke and the train station from August 13, 1961, closed to public traffic. And train station served only for military purposes or for the needs of the local population. After the political changes of 1989, however, the Brocken Railway was repaired and used the Schierke station back to its original function.

Location and facilities

The train station is located just above the village of Schierke in the area of the Harz National Park. Access roads were temporarily closed to motorized traffic. Taxis, delivery vehicles and vehicles with an appropriate authorization, as it is given, for example, for guests of the Brocken hotels, but were allowed to drive up directly to the station. At present ( 2012) are the ways however approved for road traffic. Immediately at the station building is a public paying car park. The station building is a restaurant and a ticket and souvenir sales the Harz narrow gauge railways is housed. At the station area a mobile snack is operated. The station is operated in regular service of steam locomotive hauled trains only the Harz narrow gauge railways. Just north is the flint cliff.
