Schloss Ebenrain

Castle Ebenrain is a country castle with surrounding gardens in Sissach in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft. It is considered by art history as the most important late Baroque country estate in northwestern Switzerland.

History

Castle Ebenrain was built in the years 1774/76 for the Basel silk ribbon manufacturers and dealers Martin Bachofen according to the plans of the Basel Baroque architect Samuel Werenfels. The associated late baroque gardens north and south of the building was designed by the Bernese architect Niklaus Sprüngli. Prior to 1805 - with the exception of a preserved today linden alley in the central axis - the southern gardens converted into a landscape garden of the late style phase, 1817-1821 and the northern part of the garden. After 1872 made ​​some alterations to the castle or alterations and an extension of the park to the design of the Parisian architect Édouard André. Early 20th century was a " Rebarockisierung " instead, 1934-1942 a comprehensive renovation. Since 1951, the castle held by the Canton of Basel-Land and is used for art exhibitions, concerts and lectures. From 1986 to 1989, the castle was renovated again.
