School discipline#Detention

Detention, Silentium or rework is depending on the state of an educational or disciplinary action that will be imposed against a student, for example due to bad conduct or comparable school-based offenses. Who needs detention, may, for example, not stay with the other students home, but still needs a certain amount of time in school and do additional tasks. Detention is regarded as one of the mildest educational or disciplinary measures. For school-age students, the parents must be notified in advance.

Germany

In Germany, the detention in the school laws of the countries is governed by:

The Education Law of the State of Baden -Württemberg determined that a detention of up to two lessons by the teacher can be arranged. A detention of up to four hours must be arranged by the school head.

In Schleswig -Holstein catching up culpably missed lessons is governed by prior notice to the parents in the Education Act.

Similarly, in Rhineland -Palatinate: Bare detention is permitted neither as disciplinary action even as an educational measure. However, is permissible reworking of they miss under supervision ( § 83 paragraph 1 ÜSchO ).

In Bavaria rework is any other disciplinary measure according to § 16 paragraph 3 of the school rules for grammar schools (GSO ), which is scheduled in writing with a private appointment.

In North Rhine -Westphalia rework is provided as an educational measure under supervision after prior notification to the parents.

In Hamburg, the catching up culpably missed lessons is permitted with prior notification to the parent or guardian.

In Saxony, the detention is possible after agreement of the parents.

Austria

In Austria detention as punishment is prohibited by law.

However, it is allowed to let students catch up on tasks or exercises that they have failed. However, these tasks have to be made up only in school if they can not be done at home. This means, in a sense, is thus allows detention " by the back door ".
