Schoyen Collection

The Schøyen Collection was founded by MO Schøyen (1896-1962) and continued by his son Martin Schøyen ( born January 31, 1940). It is the largest private manuscript collection of the 20th century. It covers a period of over 5,000 years, including 13,700 manuscripts and objects from different times, regions and languages ​​and on different Writing Surface. 740 of them are available online. Its collection features nearly 1,100 papyri. 2012, 90% were not yet published. From time to Schøyen Martin has sold individual pieces or entire collection of components again, as in 2013 his partly derived from the collection of palaeographers Bernhard Bischoff paleographical fragments.

The collection is systematic, tags are about the Bible, history, palaeography and literature, in addition they also presented manuscripts and interesting facts about science, mathematics, music and more. Part of the collection is available on their website.

Many pieces in the collection have no origin, but come from the art trade in illegally excavated antiquities from Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.
