Geography

Course

From its source near the spring lake, about a mile north of Upper Swabia Bad Schussenried where the main European watershed between the Rhine and the Danube runs, the Schussen predominantly flows southward to its mouth in Lake Constance.

The area around the shot source was already inhabited in prehistoric times. 1867 revealed there Oscar Fraas of a Paleolithic camp on.

In its upper reaches in the district of Biberach Schussen is the only flowing south to Lake River, the neighboring rivers cross the north to the Danube.

South of Aulendorf it passes through a narrow valley in the northern part of the Forest Altdorfer, the shot Tobel at Durlesbach from which she joined Mochenwangen in the wide shot pool. This was not created from the river, but is of glacial origin. There the Schussen flows past the towns of Weingarten, Ravensburg and the places Meckenbeuren and throats, before flowing around 1.5 kilometers south of Eriskirch in the field of Eriskircher Ried in Lake Constance.

Catchment area

The Schussen drains an area of approximately 815 square kilometers. It extends approximately from Bad Schussenried in the north to Bad Waldsee, Bergatreute, Wolfegg and Immenried until after Gebrazhofen in the east, by Vogt, Bodnegg and Tettnang to the estuary to the south, and from Friedrichshafen, Oberteuringen, Fronhofen and Altshausen until Bad Saulgau in the West.

Gradient

In its length of approximately 62 kilometers, the Schussen overcomes a height of 182 meters; which corresponds to an average gradient of 2.935 ‰. The strongest Gefällabschnitte it flows through the south of Bad Schussenried with a maximum of 7.8 ‰ and shot Tobel. Here the Schussen breaks through the moraine of the Singen stage and falls on a length of about nine kilometers to about 85 meters (= 8 ‰). From throats are still eight meters from Eriskirch 70 centimeters ( = 0.32 ‰), which has to overcome the Schussen in height to its mouth in Lake Constance.
