Schütting (Bremen)

The Schütting is located on the market square of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen building of Bremen merchants, former guild and boarding-house of merchants and since 1849 the seat of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce. Since 1973 it is a listed building.

Architectural History

Instead of a 1444 acquired the house left the Bremen merchants from 1537 to 1538 a new building in the style of rigorous, delicate Renaissance buildings of Flanders build. The stepped gable on the west side and the 1565 created by a Bremen stonemasons east gable are still preserved. The profiled cornice on the side of the market was in 1594 supplemented by a magnificent ship gable. In the 18th century the market front was changed several times, replaced in 1818 originally located on the left building front entrance through a portal in the middle. The building with its magnificent interiors and the precious equipment burned down to the perimeter on 6 October 1944. In 1956 completed rebuilding the outside front has been restored to its old form waiving the market side dormers, while the interiors have been redesigned. Already in 1951 could start operating on the ground floor of the Schütting the Chamber of Commerce again. In the next five years was performed in a second construction phase of the reconstruction of the rooms on the 1st floor. 2009 facade and copper roof have been restored and the dormers restored. The company Johann Osmers was awarded by the State Office of Historic Monuments in 2010.

The name Schütting

The first house of the merchant class was a town house in the Lange Straße / corner hook road, which was purchased in 1425 and sold again in 1444. Location and use

The Schütting is located on the south side of the town square, directly opposite Bremen Town Hall and the Roland. To the east of the cooper road passes, a little further is the Cotton Exchange.

Since 1451 there have been with the Ordinantie from January 10, 1451 regulate its handling of Bremen merchants together. This is considered the birth of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce, which was referred to the year 1849 as "Collegium Seniorum ". The first coffee shop in the German-speaking area was in 1673 in Bremen, where exactly is not occupied. It could in Schütting or have been one of the surrounding houses on the market. As of 1679, there were detectable in the coffee shop at the market side of the Schütting.

The Schütting is the house of Bremen merchants and seat of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce today. In the basement of the traditional Bremen Club has its premises, it has emerged from the company's museum.
