Sciacca

Sciacca is a port city and a thermal bath at the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

The port town of Sciacca is located about 50 km northwest of the provincial capital Agrigento. The city has 41 110 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) who are employed in industry, agriculture and tourism (including thermal baths).

Sciacca, together with the municipalities of Sciacca, Sambuca di Sicilia Santa Margherita di Belice and one of the major wine producing regions of Sicily. Since 1998, exists for the vineyards of the community with the " DOC Sciacca ' own designation of origin of quality wines ( Denominazione di origine controllata ).

The neighboring municipalities are Caltabellotta, Sciacca, Ribera and Sambuca di Sicilia.

History

To the east of the city lies the Sican settlement, this settlement was called Figuli settlement. The Sciacca area has been so settled very early. Even the Romans knew the healing springs.

Under the rule of the Arabs and the Normans, the city grew. Among the Arabs the current structure of the old town was built. At this time, the city walls and the castle were built.

In 1330 the town walls and castle were restored under Frederick II of Aragon. In the 16th century, new churches and monasteries were built. After this time, in consequence of the feud ( Caso di Sciacca ) between the Perollo family and the Count of Luna, which lasted nearly 70 years, the city declined.

During the Second World War was a strategically important military airfield ( 37.57513.058333333333 ⊙ ), which was also Aeroporto named because of its very good camouflage fantasma in Sciacca.

After the Second World War, today's thermal plants were built.

Sciacca applies not only to Acireale and Termini Imerese than the carnival stronghold in Sicily.
