Science Citation Index

The Science Citation Index (SCI ) is a scientific citation database, which was established by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI ), and is currently offered by the American- Canadian media company Thomson Reuters Corporation.

History

The development of this product has been made possible by grants from the National Institute of Health in 1961. As part of its activity supported Dr. Eugene Garfield developed a comprehensive interdisciplinary index of citations. For this index the Science Citation Index was extracted for the year 1961 in 1963, which included 562 journals and 2 million citations.

The appropriate at the time the work was published in printed form, but in 1966 the data were first issued on magnetic tapes.

Today there are both printed editions of the Science Citation Index, as well as a DVD -ROM edition. The Science Citation Index includes over 3750 journals.

Science Citation Index Expanded

Although the Science Citation Index is a common name for many users, it is often confused with the larger online version of " Science Citation Index Expanded " ( SCIE ).

The SCIE is characterized by a more comprehensive coverage of the international research literature. It will be covered in more than 150 disciplines over 8600 scientific journals. The database is available as part of the Web of Science with data from 1945 available on the internet. Furthermore, the data are available as SciSearch Via Thomson Dialog with data from 1980. As part of the Century of Science data are available from the year 1900.

The Science Citation Index Expanded is also the basis for the impact factor published annually in the Journal Citation Reports.

The Science Citation Index and the Science Citation Index Expanded serves many scientists as the basis for bibliometric analysis.
