Sciurinae
Squirrel ( Sciurus vulgaris)
The tree and flying squirrels ( Sciurinae ) form a subfamily of squirrels ( Sciuridae ).
Its most famous representative is the squirrel - - In this taxon the tree squirrels and flying squirrels are summarized. Because of their Gleitmembranen the flying squirrel were compared with all other squirrel ( " ground and tree squirrels " ) in older classifications in a separate subfamily. However, this classification does not reflect the actual descent conditions, as the ground and tree squirrels formed a paraphyletic group, meaning that they did not include all descendants of a common ancestor.
Genetic studies it was concluded that the flying squirrel and the tree squirrels form a common clade; herein are the flying squirrel, the sister group of the tree squirrels.
