Scotia Sanctuary

The Scotia Sanctuary (English Sanctuary Scotia ) is a nature reserve in the Murray Basin in New South Wales in Australia. The reserve is located 150 km south of Broken Hill on the border with South Australia. It is 65,000 hectares and is home to numerous rare species.

The vegetation consists mainly of dry bushland. In the sanctuary of endangered species are protected, which were extinct in part locally or have been reintroduced. To secure them to survive, are invasive species that do not belong to the Australian fauna, fought back. An area of 12,000 ha is to kept free of cats, foxes, goats and rabbits. Meanwhile, the protected area itself is home to sustaining populations of at least seven species that were previously extinct in the area. These include ants Beutler, short nail kangaroo, Greater bilby, Lesueur brush kangaroo, brush -tailed rat kangaroo and Big Bunny rat. Furthermore, a population of the rare Rufous hare kangaroos is grown. In addition, Western occur Grey Kangaroo, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Red Kangaroo, Kangaroo Mountain, Southern Ningaui, Small Schmalfußbeutelmaus and several species of bats. Among the birds, emus, wedge-tailed eagles and thermometer chicken can be mentioned as noteworthy species. Overall, the reserve is home to 20 mammal species, 145 bird species, 47 reptile species and two species of amphibians.
