Gary Scott Campbell ( born June 22, 1957 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. During his career he played for the Houston Aeros and Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association, as well as the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League.

Career

Campbell first played three years from 1974 to 1977 with the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey Association, the forerunner of the Ontario Hockey League. His achievements, especially in his last season with 67 points in 60 games as a defender, the scouts of the two former professional leagues, the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association was impressed so much that he in the WHA Amateur Draft in 1977 at the first overall position was selected by the Houston Aeros and the NHL amateur Draft 1977 in the first round at the ninth position of the St. Louis Blues.

The Canadians decided initially to a switch to the Houston Aeros, as in the WHA lucrative salaries paid to attract the players. After only one year in Houston, he signed as a free agent with the Winnipeg Jets, where he spent the 1978/79 season, as Houston had the game completely ceased operations. Through the entire dissolution of the WHA in 1979 and the inclusion of the Jets in the NHL Campbell played starting from the season 1979/80 in the NHL. He was next to Morris Lukowich the only player of the jet to be protected from the Dispersal Draft and thus remained in Winnipeg, although the St. Louis Blues had done everything to finally commit to her former Erstrundenwahl can. During the 1980/81 season an asthma problem arose with Campbell, who had already missed many games due to a shoulder injury, but one caused by the cool climate in Winnipeg. He therefore asked for a change and was finally sent in the summer of 1981 in a comprehensive five players transfer business to St. Louis. There, however, he came only to three inserts, as a vascular migraine headache had set by the medical treatment of his asthma. This forced him to end his career at the age of 25 years.
