Sculling

Sculling (also wricken, wriggeln ) is the Moving a boat through the back and forth movement of a belt which is rotated in the reverse motion respectively in a certain way.

Moreover, it called on sailboats and the naked back and forth movement of the rudder blade ( without rotation ) for the purpose of propulsion as sculling.

Sculling in the narrower sense ( with rotation)

The belt is hereby suspended aft ( to the rear ) in a Dolle ( scepter ) or a Wriggloch. The belt sheet describes at the correct movement and posture the shape of a figure eight. During the eight -shaped motion a feed constantly is achieved transversely to the "eight".

The technique of Wriggens similar to the locomotion technique a Venetian gondola with the difference that is directed at sculling the belt astern, while the strap of the cable laterally obliquely immersed in water and the unilateral thrust is balanced by the asymmetric design of the hull.

The usual drive is the sculling on Wriggbooten. But small sailing or motor boats can be gewriggt, useful for example dead calm or motor failure. In the sculling canoe with the paddle is used to support and to sideways movement of the boat.

Since 2000, a Wriggregatta is aligned on the Brittany coast between the island and Molène Lampaul -Plouarzel. The fastest teams whose members are then alternated approximately every three minutes when sculling, put back the approximately 8 nautical miles in two and a half hours, which corresponds to a speed of about 3 knots.

Sculling by reciprocation

Is also referred to as sculling on small sailing boats to the naked back and forth movement of the rudder blade ( without rotation ) for the purpose of propulsion. Since the rudder blade is mounted in the steering shaft so as not to be described "eight", but only a pitch similar to the movement of a wiper. The propulsion generated by the strong running movement is weaker than the corresponding propulsion by sculling in the narrow sense, as a rule; He is supported in practice often through rhythmic rocking of the boat hull around the longitudinal axis (see roles).
