Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni

The Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni was the Brotherhood of the Dalmatian in the Republic of Venice.

History

The Brotherhood probably founded in the 14th century the Dalmatian was recognized in 1451 by the Council of Ten. The Assemblies of the Brunderschaft were initially undertaken in the vicinity of the Chiesa di San Giovanni di Malta. In 1500 the Brotherhood acquired the St. Catherine's Hospital in the Castello district of the Rio San Antonino near the Fondamenta degli Schiavoni and built it up to the middle of the 16th century according to the plans of Giovanni de Zan from.

Building

The two-story facade of the building is based on the architecture of Jacopo Sansovino. Above the portal is a relief ( St. George slaying the dragon ) by Pietro da Salo from the 1552.

The equipment

The Scuola is famous for equipping 1501-1511 executed paintings of Vittore Carpaccio. Among them are located in the ground floor hall, the pictures of the legend of St. George: The hl.
