As a sign Gelt (Latin scutagium, Eng. Scutage, French escuage, écouage ) were referred to the duties in the Middle Ages. By the sign of money you could free them from military service. Especially in times of war, the sign of money was collected by the feudal lord to armor purposes. The sign money was a kind of military control.
