Séamus Hegarty

Séamus Hegarty (born 26 January 1940 in Kilcar, County Donegal) is a retired Roman Catholic bishop of Derry in Ireland.

Life

Hegarty visited in Kilcar the National School and then the St Eunan 's College in Letterkenny. He studied at St Patrick 's College in Maynooth Roman Catholic theology.

Hegarty received on 19 June 1966, the ordination. He taught at the Colaiste na Croise Naofa, Falcarragh, where he was president from 1971 to 1981. On February 12, 1982 Hegarty was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Raphoe. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Armagh, Cardinal Tomás Séamus Ó Fiaich, on 28 March of the same year. Co-consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Gaetano Alibrandi, and the Bishop of Derry, Edward Daly Kevin.

On 1 October 1994 Hegarty was appointed Bishop of Derry.

On 23 November 2011 Séamus Hegarty resigned from illness back as Bishop of Derry.
