History

The Seattle- Tacoma was founded in 1944 by the Port of Seattle as an airport for civil aviation, after the U.S. military had taken control of the airport in the Boeing plant during the Second World War. The Company received a million dollars from the Civil Aeronautics Administration and $ 100,000 from the city of Tacoma for construction.

The commercial aviation began in 1947. Having the carrier Northwest Airlines had taken the service to Tokyo in 1949, the word International was added to the name of the airport. The start or runway was extended twice, first in 1959 to let off and landing jets, and in 1961 to ensure the increasing traffic in the framework of the World Exhibition. In the years 1967-1973, among others, a second start and runway, a parking garage and two terminals were built.

In the 1970s, several residents complained, among other things due to aircraft noise, vibration and fumes that emanated from the airport. Then, 100 million U.S. dollars have been invested in order to eliminate these problems.

Incidents and accidents

On November 24, 1971, Northwest Airlines Flight 305 from Sea- Tac was kidnapped to Portland ( Oregon) by a man named Dan Cooper. He released the passengers after he had received U.S. $ 200,000 and four parachutes. After he had left to start the plane back, he jumped with the money from over the southwestern Washington.
