SeaWiFS

SeaWiFS ( Sea -viewing stands for Wide Field -of-view Sensor) is the only scientific instrument on board the satellite GeoEye - Orb - View-2 (also known as SeaStar ). SeaWiFS is the follow-up experiment of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner aboard Nimbus 7 The instrument was put in orbit on 1 August 1997 with a Pegasus rocket and took on 18 September the same year the scientific operation. The SeaWiFS project is part of NASA's Earth Observing System program.

The purpose of the instrument is to collect large amounts of data on the bio-optical properties of the oceans. Very slight differences in the color of the oceans indicate different types and concentrations of phytoplankton.
