Overall, the family includes about 130 species, of which 110 belong to the genus Sebastes, including the redfish ( Sebastes norvegicus). This well-known edible fish lives in the cold North Atlantic from Labrador over Greenland to the southern part of the Barents Sea, is 1 meter long and a maximum of 15 kg. Most species of the genus Sebastes live in the North Pacific.

Sting heads 13.5 to 108 cm long and have a stocky, laterally flattened body. The head is normally occupied by bony ridges and spines, the Vorkiemendeckel serrate, similar to the Sägebarschen ( Serranidae ).

Sting heads are usually viviparous.
