Rye (Secale ) is a genus of flowering plants in the family of grasses ( Poaceae ). Rye (Secale cereale ) is a crop of economic significance.

Features

The representatives of the genus are annual, biennial or perennial grasses. The ligule is a short, trimmed and skinned hem. The leaf blades are flat or rolled.

The inflorescence is usually a simple ear of corn, which is tightly compressed and laterally, and individually is at the top of the straw. The spikelets are double row, on each paragraph of Ährchenachse is a spikelets. The spikelet is sessile and two flowered. There is a stalk -like extension over the florets. The florets are hermaphroditic. Rarely, there are three hermaphroditic flowers or one to two sterile flowers on the two fertile flowers. The glumes are subulate, keeled and einnervig. The lemmas lanceolate, keeled and five annoying. On the keel are stiff, like a comb protruding hair. The lemma is wearing a long, straight, rough awn.

Dissemination

The representatives of the genus are mainly found in the temperate regions of Europe and Asia.

The genus Secale is placed within the family of grasses in the subfamily Pooideae, tribe Triticeae.
