Sečanj

Sečanj ( Serbian Cyrillic Сечањ, Hungarian Szécsány, German Sets Chan or Peter Heim ) is a city in the province of Vojvodina in Serbia with about 2,600 inhabitants. The town is the seat of the municipality of the same name, with about 16,300 inhabitants Opština Sečanj. It lies on the right bank of the Timis. The main industry is agriculture.

History

Sets Chan was founded in 1806 by German settlers. After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 Sets Chan came under Hungarian control. In the same year the town received market rights. While the membership of the Kingdom of Hungary, the place bore the official name Szécsány. By the Treaty of Trianon (1920 ) Szécsány fell to Serbia and bears since then the place name Sečanj.

Before the Second World War lived in Sečanj especially German, who were expelled at the end of partisans. The German community was thus dissolved in 1945. After the war, Serbs were settled from Herzegovina and other parts of the Banat.
