Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food

The Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Fisheries and Food ( SAGARPA ) is the political " office ( the government) for Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food " in Mexico, comparable to a Ministry of Agriculture.

The Secretariat was originally established as the " Secretariat for Agriculture and promotion " ( Secretaría de Agricultura y Fomento ) in 1946 extended to the Secretaría de Agricultura y Ganadería. With the merger with the Secretaría de Recursos Hidráulicos founded in 1947, in 1976 by ​​President José López Portillo, the task field of agricultural irrigation was added and the Secretariat contributed to 1994, then the name Secretaría de Agricultura y Recursos HIDRAULICOS. From 1994, the Secretariat was called Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería y Desarrollo Rural, and since 2000 it assumed its present name.

The SAGARPA is divided into three sub- secretariats ( Subsecretarías ) for " Agriculture " ( Agricultura ), "Land Development" and " promoting the agricultural sector " ( Fomento a los Agronegocios ) and the General Coordination Unit for animal husbandry ( Coordinación General de Ganadería ).
