Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Mexico)

The Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales ( SEMARNAT ) is the political " office ( the government) for environment and natural resources " in Mexico. As Secretariat of the Government, it is comparable to a Ministry of Environment.

It was founded in 1982 with the previous name " Secretariat for Fisheries " ( Secretaría de Pesca ). In 1994 it was expanded to the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente, Recursos Naturales y Pesca. In 2000, the responsibility for Fisheries was transferred to the SAGARPA, making the SEMARNAT received the present name.

The SEMARNAT is divided into three sub- secretariats ( Subsecretarías ) for " Environmental Planning and - politics " ( Planeación y Política Ambiental ), " Environmental Management " ( Gestión para la Protección Ambiental ) and " environmental promotion and normativity " ( Fomento y normatividad Ambiental ) and the sector bodies ( Organismos Sectorizados ). The SEMARNAT is subject to the National Commission for Comisión Nacional del Agua Water (CNA ) and the Federal Environmental Protection Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente ( PROFEPA ).
