The Pacific Community ( engl. Pacific Community; Communauté du Pacifique French ) is an international organization with the objective of social and economic development of its Member States through expert and advisory activities.

It was founded on February 6, 1947 as a South Pacific Commission (South Pacific Commission) from Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, making it one of the oldest regional organizations worldwide. The founding treaty is called the Canberra Agreement.

Got its name the organization in 1997 In her appearance she mostly uses the term Secretariat of the Pacific Community, in order to maintain continuity in the use of the abbreviation SPC, which originally stood for the South Pacific Commission. ; however it is at the Secretariat only a part of the organization.

The headquarters of the Pacific Community is located in Noumea, New Caledonia; the education center and the agricultural and forestry program are based in Suva, Fiji. Current General is Jimmie Rogers of the Solomon Islands.

Members

The Pacific Community currently has 26 members. These are firstly the 22 Pacific Island countries and territories, as well as the four founding countries of Australia, France, New Zealand and United States. The United Kingdom was a short interruption ( 1996-1998 ) Member until 2005.
