Seed

A seed or seed ( related to Latin semen ) is the diaspore of seed plants ( Spermatophyta ). It consists of a seed coat ( testa), the embryo and endosperm often yet ( or endosperm perisperm ). The seed thus contains all the facilities to grow under favorable germination conditions into a new plant.

Seeds develop after a person sitting in the ovule ovum is fertilized by a generative cell of the pollen grain. From the fertilized egg ( zygote ) is formed by mitotic cell divisions, a plant embryo, but is not growing, but is held by partial dehydration in a kind of provisional hold. There are significant differences in detail between

  • Gymnosperms ( gymnosperms ): The seed is exposed and is not of a fruit wall ( pericarp ) enclosed.
  • Angiosperms ( Angiospermae): The seed is in the ovary ( carpel ) and is therefore surrounded by a pericarp.

The gardener or farmer does not speak of seed, but of seed or seed.
