Selayar Island

Salajar or Selajar ( Indonesian pulau Selayar, other spellings: Saleijer, Salayar, Silaijara ) is located south of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and part of the island chain that separates the Floressee of the Banda Sea as defined by the International Hydrographic Organization.

Salajar is along with some smaller islands ( Pasi, Gusung Tallang, Bahuluang, Kalao, Bonerate, Kajuwadi, Jampeja, Lalao (also Lambego ) Kalaotu and others) 832 km ² ( 81.4 km from north to south and 13.1 km from west to east), and is the administrative district of Salajarinseln ( kabupaten Kepulauan Selayar ) in the province of South Sulawesi with 98,000 inhabitants. Headquarters of the kabupaten is Benteng ( indones. for " fortress, Fort "). Other place are Bonelohe, Padang, Barangbarang. South of the fort is Benteng Benteng Bontobangun.

All islands in the group are flat and fertile, but also partly stony, like Pasi, overgrown with bushes and sandy. Only the main island is criss-crossed by a mountain of sandstone, which rises to 1,780 m altitude. The coasts are fringed by coral reefs. The island is best known for its sandy beaches and a diving area.

The inhabitants are predominantly Muslims of the peoples of the Bugis, Makassar and Konjo.
