SELEX Galileo is a defense and electronics companies of the Italian Finmeccanica Group, headquartered in Rome and Basildon. The company was established between 2005 and 2009 by the merger of a number of British and Italian companies that were able to look back on some of over one hundred years of history.

Business

SELEX Galileo mainly manufactures avionics and radar equipment for aircraft. There are also unmanned aerial vehicles (Falco ) and various electronic systems for military and police purposes. The company employs in Italy, the United Kingdom and in the United States approximately 7,000 employees. In 2008, sales amounted to 1.645 billion euros.

History

The Italian share of the company, mainly owing to the 1864 founded Officine Galileo. This company built from Florence, among other fire control. In 2000, the company Galileo Avionica SpA was through the merger of Officine Galileo and several other companies. On the British side, the story of SELEX Galileo goes back to 1897 by Guglielmo Marconi founded the telecommunications company Marconi, which was then taken over in 1946 by English Electric, and this in 1968 by the General Electric Company. The parts of the business of GEC, which dealt with military technology, were given the name Marconi ( GEC -Marconi, in front of several other name combinations with " Marconi "). The Finmeccanica 's share of SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems amounted initially to 75 percent.
