Selkirk Rex

Selkirk Rex is a breed cat, which is characterized by a curly coat.

General

It was discovered in the U.S. in 1987. In an animal shelter, a seemingly ordinary house cat litter was delivered. Quick fell there on, however, that one of the boys was different from the others. A blue-cream and white females from the litter had very different fur than the other siblings of the litter. Also, the eye color differed from those of others. His eyes were bright green and the fur was short and curly. Also noticed that the whiskers were not, as usual, but also frizzy. Since they were of the opinion that there had to be on an special kitten, it was passed on to the breeder Jeri Newman. There it was named Miss DePesto of Noface.

Jeri Newman was a famous Persian breeder in the U.S. and soon decided to breed with the odd cat. In the course of the first considerations a name for the new race had to be found. After much deliberation, she decided on the name Selkirk Rex. Selkirk in honor of your father - Rex because of the curly coat.

Just over a year after Miss DePesto was moved in with Jeri Newman, she decided to breed Miss DePesto with a black Persian cat.

From the mating eventually emerged six healthy kittens. Three of them were born with curly hair and three with normal fur. From this mating, therefore, indicated that the curls had to be present as a dominantly inherited Genmerkmal. So it is quite sufficient that one of the parents has curly fur. The cats are not related to other Rex species. For example, the short curls of Devon Rex or Cornish Rex are a recessive trait.
