Selkup people

The Selkups are an indigenous people of Siberia, the widely scattered in the area between the middle reaches of the rivers Ob and Yenisei still partially nomadic lives. The 4000 Selkups among the Samoyeds, a group of smaller ethnic groups, which belongs to the Uralic language family. Previously, they were called also Ostyak Samoyed, but this could lead to confusion, because the Ostyaks, who call themselves chanting, have a different origin.

About 47 % of Selkups still speak their own language. The Selkups have the privilege to catch more sturgeon and other game fish from the rivers, as it is the Russians allowed.
