K

The Sella Pass (Italian Passo Sella, Val Gardena - Ladin Jëuf de Sela or Mëisules, fassanisch - Ladin Jouf de Sela ) is a 2240 m slm high mountain pass in Italy. It combines in Val Gardena Wolkenstein in South Tyrol with the Val di Fassa Canazei (Italian Val di Fassa ) in Trentino.

Location

The Sella lies in a straight line about 33 km east of Bolzano, the shortest road link, however, is 53.4 km long. It is surrounded by 3181 m high Sasso Lungo ( in the northwest), the 2485 m high Col Rodella the south and the 2974 m high to the Sella massif belonging Piz Gralba in the east. Beyond the Fassa Valley, the Marmolada massif is visible with its glaciers in the south.

History

Archaeological finds (arrowheads, pottery shards ) in favor of a Stone Age settlement in the area. About the use of the pass in antiquity and the Middle Ages nothing definite is known.

1872, the pass road was completed. The first hostel in the Sella Pass, in the predominantly commercial travelers were housed, was built in 1884 by Carlo Valentini below the summit. 1903 was followed by the Sellajochhaus (built by the German and Austrian Alpine Club ) and another inn, Mary Flora, was built in 1934. All three facilities exist after conversion and still be used by tourists today.

On 14 July 1946, the Sella Pass was the scene of a mass rally of the Ladin ( with more than 3000 participants ) in favor of a connection of its valleys and throughout South Tyrol in Austria.

The first cable car from the First World War served the troops supply. With the rise of tourism in the Dolomites mid-1950s more lifts, trails, climbing routes, and ski trails developed.

Infrastructure / tourism

The Sella Pass, together with the Pordoijoch, the Passo Gardena and Campolongo the Four Passes " Sella Ronda " (it: Sella Ronda ) around the Sella Group.

In winter the area is connected to the nationwide ski Cooperative Dolomiti Superski. The Sella can be circled on groomed slopes in both directions.

From Sellajochhaus a standing cable car runs in the summer in the Langkofelscharte to Toni Demetz hut. More chairlifts below the Langkofelgruppe reach the Grohmann ridge. Hiking trails lead west through the Langkofelscharte or around the Sasso Lungo to S. Cristina in Val Gardena, south of the Col Rodella and to Campitello di Fassa or through the Val Salei to Canazei and north between large boulders and scree slopes of Sasso Lungo ( the Stone Town so-called ) through to Selva. To the east of the difficult Pößnecker ferrata leads into the Sella towers.

The ski area is not on the summit, but around 2 km to the north on the part of the Val Gardena below the summit. Building it is by cable cars and ski lifts of Piz Sella and Piz Seteur, starting from Plan de Gralba, a district of Selva.

The Passo Sella is also along the route of the Coppa d' Oro delle Dolomiti automobile race.
