Sellin Pier

The Sellin Pier is a pier in Sellin on the island of Rügen. The pier has a restaurant near the beach above the water as well as a diving capsule.

History

Initial plans in 1901 foresaw a 60 meter long investors, but did not meet the requirements due to the very high number of visitors. . The first 508-meter long pier with restaurant originated then in 1906 the pack ice damaged the structure in 1918; in 1920, the bridgehead was destroyed by fire. In 1924 the bridge was again damaged by ice conditions. In 1925, a new pier with a platform and concert hall; they had a length of about 500 meters. In severe ice conditions in winter 1941/1942, this bridge was destroyed. The undestroyed bridge house remained. In the 1950s to 1970s, here was a popular dance bar. During this time, however, the structure of the building has been neglected; 1978 had to be demolished the dilapidated bridge head including superstructures.

In 1991, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker Sellin and thus joined the active support of the reconstruction. On August 27, 1992, the reconstruction began in several sections according to the models of buildings from 1906 and 1925. Was from Sellin honorary citizen Hans bud on December 20, 1997 symbolically cut the ribbon for structural transfer. The official opening of the new bridge house, and of gastronomy was held on 2 April 1998. With 394 meters in length it is the longest pier on the island.
