Selzach is a municipality in the district of livers of the canton Solothurn in Switzerland. The former French name of the municipality is Saucy.

Geography

Selzach is located on 445 m above sea level. M. 6 km west of the main town Canton of Solothurn ( straight line ), about halfway between Solothurn and Grenchen. The village is located at the northern edge of the Aareniederung, on the flat alluvial fan of Loch Bach Selzacherbachs respectively, at the foot of the Jura, at the foot of the Hasenmatt.

Population

With 3160 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Selzach belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the 92.5% of residents speak German, 1.3% French-speaking and 1.2 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Selzach amounted in 1850 to 1052 inhabitants, 1900 to 1537 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased steadily until 1970 on 2948 people. After a subsequent decline to 2739 inhabitants ( 1980) has since been re- recorded a slight overall increase in population.

Economy

Selzach was until the 20th century, a predominantly coined by agriculture village. Traffic

The community is a very good transport developed. It lies on the old main road from Solothurn to Biel. History

The territory of Selzach was settled very early, as evidenced by numerous stray finds and excavations from the Celtic and Roman times. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1181 under the name Selsacho; 1228 the French name Scigie is preserved. Later, the names Selzach ( 1268 ), Sauci ( 1275 ), Selsago ( 1279 ) and Saucy ( 1356) appeared. The place name comes from the Latin personal name Saltius or Salacius and accordingly is owned, Good of Saltius / Salacius.

Since the Middle Ages Selzach belonged to the lords of Strassberg, but also the Saint Urs pin in Solothurn and the Counts of Neuchâtel - Nidau ​​had rich land in the municipality. As 1309, the rule Altreu was detached from the rule Strassberg, Selzach came to Altreu and informed from now on its destiny. In 1375 the village was drawn through the plundering of Gugler affected. Attractions

The Church of the Assumption was probably founded by the Counts of Neuchâtel - Nidau ​​.
